Talk

Please join me December 16th at 6pm Theatre 80 St. Marks for a presentation of my acclaimed NYC books, Invisible City and Night Walk, published by Steidl Verlag. I hope you can come by to see and hear what this work is about. Invisible City, when it was initially released in 1988 was a New York Times notable book of the year. In 1992 it was exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art. It made its way into the seminal Parr/Badger The Photobook: A History, listed in Auer+Auer’s compilation of important photobooks and cited in 10x10’s survey of important American photography books. Although acclaimed in a pre-Internet era, Invisible City was out of print for twenty-six years. After years of work and some good fortune, I was able to get it reprinted along with a new book of work from that period, Night Walk. And they been both embraced warmly. Since last year, both Invisible City and Night Walk have been selected photobooks of the year by TIME, Mother Jones and Vogue Italia. They’ve appeared in over 150 articles from over a dozen countries and have remained on Amazon’s best seller’s list since their release. The New York Times has twice run special portfolios featuring the work accompanying articles in the Metropolitan section and most recently in the Sunday Review. The book trailers have been viewed by people in 124 countries. An exhibition of the work in The Netherlands was nominated for the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize. I'll be showing images from Invisible City and Night Walk as well as the video trailers with music by Live Skull and Sonic Youth. I'll be telling stories from the East Village, how I ended up on Avenue B, what the neighborhood was like and what happened when the landlord abandoned the building and a drug war ensued. I'll talk about how I came to make Invisible City and Night Walk. A book signing will follow the discussion. Hope to see you there! Theatre 80 St. Marks @ 80 St. Marks Place, NYC 10003.

The Museum of the American Gangster asked me to give a free public talk. It was a request I couldn't refuse.
